Abstract

The engagements season which is held annually in Imelchil, South Morroco, is related to an ancient legend which people still recount: in the past, a young man from Ait Ibrahim tribe loved a girl from Ait Iaaza tribe. (Both tribes were from Ait h'didou tribes in Imelchile. They were deeply in love and what they wanted most was to marry. But the deep-rooted hostility between the tribes prevented them from fulfilling that dream. Both of the lovers left towards the mountains. The young man drowned himself in a lake which name is now “Isli” (the groom), the young woman drowned herself in a lake which name is now “tIslit” (the bride). The program presents the customs and traditions which characterize the engagement season in Imelchil.
