Abstract

Since the beginning of the 19th century, a European competition for the control of North Africa has begun, and different pretexts were used to justify interventions in these countries. The occupation of Algeria in 1830 and the defeat of Morocco, in Isly (1844) and Tetouane created a feeling of weakness among the Moroccans. They felt that the force they lacked belonged to the European Christians who imposed a civilization that was totally different from the Islamic one.
