Abstract

The Kasbah of the Oudayas is located at the estuary of Abi Rakrak river, between Rabat and Salé. It is a fortress built by the Almoravids (1056-1114 ) and surrounded by walls. It was used during the war against the Berber tribes of Berghouatas which had established an Emirate on the Atlantic coast, in the Middle Ages. Its importance increased during the reign of the Almohads (1130 - 1269). Then, the fortress was abandoned until the settlement of the Moriscos (Muslims expelled from Andalusia ), who rehabilitated it and supported it with fortified walls. Its current name, "Oudayas" was given during the reign of the Alouite Sultan, Moulay Abderrahmane (1822- 1859). It is the name of military battalions from a tribe who served in the Sultan's army.
