Abstract

The museum of archeology in Rabat is one of the oldest institutions created to display and preserve ruins. It joined the launch of archaeological research at the beginning of the French protectorate, and has accompanied it until today. The museum was established in 1931, in facilities belonging to the department of antiquities. The initial goal was to display items coming from Benassa and Tamoussida sites, not far from the capital. In 1960, the museum was inaugurated as a national museum specialized in the conservation and display of pre-islamic items. The museum is famous for its bronze statues mainly : the statue of King Juba II (23-25 B.C), the statue of Catton (46 B.C) and the statue of the old hunter. Although it is rather small, it plays an important role in educating and informing people about archaeological research.
