Abstract

This 6th episode of the series "Twentieth Century Morocco" deals with an important period in the history of modern Morocco between 1921 and 1926. The first important event was to give Tangiers, a special international status ; as it shelters the foreign countries representations. The second one is the war against the Spanish forces in the Rif, northern Morocco, under the leadership of Mohamed Abdelkrim El Khattabi. The most important battle he led was the battle of Anwal in 1921 in which the Spanish troops underwent great damages. It became a model for liberation movements in different parts of the world. This prompted the French and the Spanish forces to ally. Mohamed Abdelkrim El Khattabi was then defeated in 1925, and exiled to La Reunion island then to Alexandria, where he settled until his death.
