Abstract

Since he came to power in 1837, Moulay Hassen I managed to preserve the unity and the stability of Morocco. Despite the heavy heritage of the Isly defeat in 1844 against the French forces and the setback of the Tetouan war between 1859 and 1860, he carried out internal reforms that included the army, education and other vital sectors. He also minted the coins and established intense diplomatic relationships with some European countries. When he died in 1894, his minor son replaced him, under the tutelage of El Hadjeb Aba Hammad. This period was characterized by deterioration and internal unrest.
