Abstract

Books written by travellers, Moroccan businessmen, foreign embassadors and the defeat of Morocco in the Tetouan and Isly wars contributed to the idea Moroccans have of Europe. A new awareness rose among the elite who discovered the causes of modernity and progress in Europe, mainly in France. They tried to keep up with it and consider it as a model to be followed in economic, political, social and cultural fields.
