Abstract

Hayek is a sort of silk veil made in a traditional way. The city of Kairouan is a tunisian city founded in the year 50 of the Hejira calendar, the equivalent of the year 670 A.D. Kairouan was founded by Oukba Ibno Nfaiä and is located 160 km outside of Tunis, the capital. Its strategic positioning is the reason why it was choosen by Oukba Ibno Nfaiä, particularly for the Islamic Fateh (the Islamic Expansion of the 8th century). Kairouan is the city where Islam began its expansion towards neighbouring countries (Algeria, Morocco, Spain...). The city of Kairouan is also known for its heritage, especially for its architectural heritage and its several traditions transmitted from one generation to the next. The tradition of hayek is based on a traditional and basic weaving loom, the work is led by the use of both hands and feet at the same time; this work needs professionalism and a lot of patience.
