Abstract

Animal skins are used in manufacturing shoes , clothing and furniture . cattle is considered as the main source of skins while skins from deer, goats and sheep are important too . The traditional leather tanning art is based on the use of colors extracted from natural materials in traditional ways. The tanner uses his physical strength to treat and remove the layer of flesh and hair from the skins , scrapes leather with a knife ,then uses water ponds to soften and adapt layers of leather . In Tunisian traditional markets, you can find leather products that characterize the Tunisian heritage and which are popular for both Tunisians and tourists. Leather tanning is one of the traditional crafts that still exist in Tunisia and plays an important role in its industry despite the high cost of these products .
