Abstract

The current name of the Tunisian town "Sfax" is the twist of the legendary Berber hero Sifax, Sofax, or Sifax. The town is located at a northern latitude of 34,42 and at an eastern longitude of 10,51. It is the second largest town in Tunisia after the capital Tunis, located 280 km away, southeast. It counts about 340, 000 inhabitants in 2005. (More than 500, 000 inhabitants of the urban area, as estimated by the Statistics National Institute.) The town has an international airport and is the capital of Southern Tunisia. This documentary presents all the archeological and heritage monuments of the town of Sfax. This latter is a sea town located in the Gulfe of Gabes. Among these specificities, we may quote the special architecture of its old houses, pastries, the embroideries on the wedding and celebration costumes. The main monuments in town are: the Great Mosque, Bab El-Jebli, Bab Diwa and Bab El-Qasbah.
