Abstract

The word Kairouan is a persian word. It has been adopted by the Arabs and means "place of weapons", "place where the caravans go to relax" or "place of meeting during the war". The historian relates that the constructions of Kairouan, as the islamic minaret , are visited by the travellers of the knowledge to learn the charia and the sciences of the Quran. Kairouan has played an important role during the Islamic Fath and represent their starting-point to go to Spain, Morocco, Algeria and the South Africa. It is also the sanctuary of numerous companions of the prophet.

Additional information

Kairouan was founded in about the year 670 (the hijri year 50). Uqba Ibnou Nafeâ wanted a fondation which could be a strategic place where muslims could settle in. He was afraid of the fact that Africans could give up Islam if they lived by themselves.
