Abstract

The 1907 Country Farmhouse shows how two families, the Pérez and the Camañes, adapt to living conditions similar to those of early 20th century rural Catalonia. We get a glimpse at what life was like for tenant farmers in that period, at their customs and daily activities. The two families have to share the house, farmland, livestock, water and food supplies and the viewers observe their coexistence through discretely-placed cameras that serve as silent observers of all that unfolds: everything from conversations to rivalries, conflicts and personal thoughts. During the 25 episodes series we watch the relationship between the two families developed as they learn to live together in conditions that seem impossible from a 21st century perspective. Everyday things that we take for granted such as light, water, cooking, or washing are a big challenge for them. The program gives special emphasis to how the protagonists feel about the life they are leading, both through their statements on camera and through their personal diaries.
