Abstract

This comedy series charts the trials and tribulations of the Cargol family from the 13th century through to the present. The Cargols live in a village in the depths of rural Catalonia alongside their sworn enemies, the Esclatasangs. Catalan history over the last 700 years provides the backdrop to the woes and triumphs of the Cargol family. But audiences everywhere will enjoy the riotously irreverent humor based on the interplay of momentous events, petty village intrigues and the Cargols' worm's eye view of life. It is 1934, during the years of the Second Republic. In 1931 a new regime put an end to the old monarchy and reinstated democracy and important social changes. Catalonia’s autonomy was recognized and a Statute drawn up that established a new relationship between Catalonia and the central Spanish government. But in October 1934 the new right-wing government put all of those victories at risk. The Catalan government (Generalitat), with President Companys at the helm, decided to challenge the central government and proclaim Catalonia an independent state. In the meantime, in the Santa Guerala valley, another declaration of independence from outside powers is taking shape.
