Abstract

The “Slow” movement is steadily spreading in the Western world. It is a lifestyle that began with “slow food,” meant to be savored and usually accompanied by a fine wine. Now over 80,000 people in 180 countries are associated with this movement based on the philosophy that slowing down improves quality of life. Greve, in Chianti, is one of four pioneer Tuscan cities forming part of “Cittàslow,” an association of towns of fewer than 50,000 inhabitants that are struggling against the stressful rhythm of city life. The movement encourages the consumption of regional produce which then helps traditional establishments stay in business and avoid being swallowed up by the supermarket chains. Alarms and neon signs are prohibited in Greve, a water purifying system is required, trash pick up is done selectively according to content, transgenic produce cannot be grown there and they promote city vegetable gardens.
