Abstract

Summer vacation is a modern phenomenon. Despite the fact that for years members of the aristocracy and powerful classes maintained separate summer residences, the concept became more widespread over the course of the 20th century as, first, the bourgeoisie, and then the working classes began taking vacations. Little by little the summer holiday idea began to change from one of merely spending some sedentary months in a relaxed country home, to travelling to more distant and exotic places. Gloria Soler’s book “Summer Holidays” is a sociological and historical analysis of the vacation concept, a phenomenon that generates large quantities of money throughout the world and gives people something to dream about and look forward to for months.
