Abstract

It's a program of train, tram and metro trips around Catalonia and in Madrid, with Matthew Tree, an English writer living in Catalonia. The author travels with, and interviews people who live in the places visited. The program includes performances by musicians with ties to the destination. The route: Northern Catalonia (La Tor- Perpignan), Matthew is traveling with the journalist Pere Codonyan, and Jeanot Soler, a gypsy from Perpignan. The stops: they take the yellow train from La Tor de Querol to Vilafranca de Conflent, where they take a 4X4 off-road vehicle which takes them to a mountain shelter. From there, they climb the Canigó mountain where, just before reaching the peak, Matthew recites a fragment of Jacint Verdaguer’s poem, “Canigó.” In the Prada de Conflent region, they visit Rià, which is considered to be the cradle of Catalonia. There, they meet up with historian Oriol Jonqueras and with Jeanot Soler, a member of the Tekameli rumba band. He joins them on the bus trip to Perpignan, passing through El Soler on the way, where Pere leaves the group. Once in Perpignan, they give Jeanot’s family a helping hand at their market stand, take part in a USAP rugby team practice and talk with Philippe Boher, the team’s coach. They also run into Oleguer Presas, a player for the Barcelona football club, and Roc Casagran, poet and coauthor of “The Road to Ithaca.” 3% of the profits from that book go to nursery schools in the area. The travelers visit one of these schools, together with Joan Pere Le Bihan, director general of the nursery school network. The performances: Pascal Comelade plays “Spontex Symphony” on a toy piano in a freight car.
