Abstract

In the 1960s, Europe sold itself as the top producer of farm produce in the world and at the time the recently-created European Union protected its countries and denied entry of farm produce from outside its borders. Fifty years later, this scenario is no longer valid. Developing countries such as South Africa, India, Peru, and others, are beginning to put their cheaper rice, fruit and vegetables on the market and Europe has agreed to buy it in exchange for exporting European Union machinery and technology to the developing countries. The EU’s new agricultural policy supports a strong, modern European farming industry that respects the environment and produces high-quality goods.
