TELEVISION TUNISIENNE 1 COLLECTION

Télévision Tunisienne 1 is the new name adopted since 2011 by the public generalist TV channel which was first established in 1963, officially marking the celebration of the evacuation of Bizerte.

In this presentation we have focused on a “Best Of” presentation of our selection, which is particularly representative of the Tunisian craft heritage.

The documentary “Making of the Tunisian ‘Balgha’” (TUN00020) retraces the various stages in the making of the “Balgha”, a Tunisian craft shoe for men which is associated with social occasions and important events such as weddings and circumcisions. The Balgha is today rarely worn in everyday life, but it remains an essential accessory for men wearing the traditional hand-crafted Jebba garment.

The documentary صناعة الحائك الحريري  (TUN00024) represents the crafts used to make the silk fabric known as “Hayek” in the historic city of Kairouan, a fortress of the Islamic civilisation.

The documentary “Making of the Burnous” (TUN00027) portrays the weaving of the Burnous, a traditional Berber garment for men. The Tunisian version of the Burnous is specific both in its cut and its style.

The documentary “Making of the Margoum” (TUN00048) retraces the stages of the making of the Mergoum, a typical Tunisian carpet type, with its colours and its designs.

The documentary “Making of cages at Sidi Bou Said” (TUN00050) focuses on the celebrated suburb of Sidi Bou Saïd, which has been granted World Heritage status by UNESCO. It represents the typical colours of this suburb (white and blue), and the style of the wrought iron used in windows in its residences.

The documentary “Lute making” (TUN00051); the 5-stringed Tunisian instrument is specific in terms of the tones it generates, and the form of the bowl, which is different from that of the Oriental lute (of Egypt, Iraq or Syria).

The documentary “The making of mosaics” (TUN00052); Tunisia has the largest collection of mosaics in the world, and this documentary has been chosen to demonstrate the techniques used in this craft.

The documentary “Wood engraving” (TUN00054); wood engraving has been perpetuated in Islamic civilisation, and Tunisia has a large number of monuments which illustrate this ancestral art.

The documentary “The making of crystal” (TUN00055); craft glassmaking is an art which stands out from the rest because of its techniques, and the austere conditions in which it is made. In Tunisia, this art is currently disappearing, and only a few disparate workshops still remain.

The documentary “Olive wood sculpture and decoration” (TUN00059); Tunisia is one of the world’s largest exporters of olive oil, and olive wood is used in Tunisia for carpentry, and the creation of kitchen utensils and other decorative objects.
