Abstract

Built by the Romans on the hill overlooking the valley of Bouregreg 23 centuries ago, the city was once a port of call for the Phoenicians and Carthaginians. Under the Roman rule, it was known as Sala or Sala Colonia. The Merinide Sultan Abu Youcef Yakoub chose this place to build a mosque in the middle of the ruins. The site then took the name “Chellah”.
