Abstract

Youssef Bnou Tachfine was the first king of the Berber dynasty of the Almoravids, who ruled over a part of Senegal and North Africa, and much of Spain and Portugal until 1147. In 1062, he built his capital, Marrakech. It was from this city that he conducted his campaigns, particularly in Spain. In 1086, at the request of al-Mu'tamid, Youssef, then Sultan of the Almoravid dynasty, came to Spain to help fight Alfonso VI who invaded Saragossa. He defeated Alfonso VI on 2nd November 1086 in Sagrajas (az-Zallaqa), before turning against al-Mu'tamid. He took over Seville, Granada, Almeria, Badajoz, and finally deposed al-Mu'tamid in 1091, sending him into exile in Morocco, where he died four years later in Aghmat.
