Abstract

The Institute for peace studies and Greenpeace international held a joint one day seminar to discuss "steps towards a Middle East nuclear free zone". The seminar brought together a group of international and Egyptian experts on nuclear energy and weapons to give their professional opinion on the issue. The main aim of this gathering was to stress the dangers related to the proliferation of nuclear arms and to encourage dialogue on all levels about how to increase security in the region. The ambassador Ali Maher opens up the first session entitled "future energy requirements for Egypt and the Middle East" and invites Dr Mohamed Moussa Omran to give his presentation. He states that Egypt has been one of the first countries to champion the proposal of creating a nuclear free in Middle East.
