Abstract

The Conferences within the framework of "Thinking the Mediterranean" aim at creating a field of dialogue and exchange. Jean-Luc Arnaud speaks of the Mediterranean as a sea which is a symbolic site of contact between the city and the countryside. He states that the history of cities of the Mediterranean is a story of growth, decay and rebirth, where cities are growing and are failing more rapidly than in the interior of countries. He also speaks of the importance of Istanbul and its 14 centuries of history, which is a double crossing point, one by the sea and the other by land. There is also a talk of the new literary and scientific genre born around the Mediterranean in the fifteenth century : The "isolari" a way to represent and map the islands and shores of the Mediterranean. A Great Venetian speciality, which was also appreciated by the Ottomans. In addition to the meeting between the humanist tradition of mapping and related needs of navigation techniques, the "isolari" also meet the geopolitical challenges of their time, where drawing and representation represented an act of appropriation of a territory.
