Abstract

We are on the Black Sea rather than on the Mediterranean Sea, but it is a sea so similar. Built in the Delta of the Danube, Sulina is considered as a opening of Romania on the sea. The establishment of the headquarters of the Danube Commission in 1865 ( until 1939), one of the effects of the Crimean War ( 1853 -1856 ), propelled the small fishing port to the foreground. The communist era added a bit of industry, including a fish cannery. Then, the city declined with the fall of communism. Nowadays, Salina has only about 5000 inhabitants, abandoned buildings and a great deal of nostalgia.
