Abstract

This is where the patron saint of Algiers is buried, Sidi Abderrahmane Thaâlibi, whose real name was Ibn Zeid Ibn Makhlouf Abderrahmane El Thaâlibi, from the Thaâliba tribe. The holy man lies in a carved gilded wooden shrine, over which many silk banners hang down; other small graves are located in this mosque; the floor is carpeted, faïences cover the walls and beautiful chandeliers adorn the ceiling; several of these chandeliers were donated by Queen Victoria as an offering after her wishes were fulfilled; at the foot of the coffin, lies a large wooden padlocked chest, where visitors insert money. The mausoleum of Sidi Abderrahmane was listed National Heritage in 1987.

Life Abderrahamne Thaalibi, man of faith, a great connoisseur of religion and Islamic scholar with experienced, is signed by the great desire for knowledge and learning. It is exactly this desire that led him, in the late fourteenth century, Algeria where he was born, and then to Tunisia to Egypt. After twenty years of travel he returned to his homeland where he is dedicated to the transmission of knowledge accumulated in his travels. His literary output is impressive, and its capacity for transmitting knowledge acquired. After his death, his body was deposited in the place where he taught and his tomb is, until today, a popular pilgrimage destinations from the Algerians.

Defined the patron saint of Algiers, it is one of those men who received a special grace of God, to which they owe their deep piety and wisdom distinguished, some of them lined thaumaturgic donations. The saints are seen as examples for Muslims and those who encounter them or visit their graves may receive special graces.

The cult of saints is rependu in many countries of the Sunni Muslim world (Turkey, Egypt, Tunisia ..) as well as among Shiites, although Muslim orthodoxy to perceive a danger of polytheism. This is Muhammad, the Prophet of Islam, that considered the greatest of saints. It is within the more mystical currents found rependues attitude individuate in the personality of the original Islam of extraordinary figures and paradigmatic of the relationship between man and God as the veneration of the great ascetics and leader of the past and present. Popular piety loves to visit places dedicated to the memory of the saints to pray and make wishes, offer sacrifices and to implore the help of the holy gifts the various questions, material or spiritual in nature.

The mausoleum is dedicated to him in Algiers, in the upper part of the Casbah. Built in the XVII century, it consists of a qubba (monument housing a tomb) and a mosque. On the right side we find the fear madrasas, which is now a training center. The site, like all the Casbah, was classified in 1987 in the list of World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

- a region situated 86 kilometers to the south east of Algerian capital.

- In a conservative family, the man grown up and received a religious, scientific and moral education.

- We know that he traveled to several Arabic and islamic countries at the end of 14th century,

- such as Tunisia and Egypt, to study diverse sciences. After 20 years spent in foreign countries

- studying all sciences, he returned in his native country and devoted himself to the cult of Allah and to teaching sciences to his compatriots.

- This was occurring in the ancient mosque, “The great mosque of Algeria”, where he wrote his book Al-jami’ Al-kabir.

- When we look at his books, we discover there is more than a hundred.

- Most well known are The beautiful jewels in Quran interpretation and The luxurious sciences about the next world.

- On account of his extensive knowledge of religious and other sciences, he has been appointed to re-establish justice between citizens,

- but he soon abandoned this function, preferring to teach.

- In this place that was called “Jinan talaba”, “Students garden”,

- he taught to students bases of religion and Islamic Sharia.

- Because of the greatness of his status, his group of companions and his knowledge,

- a mosque has been built in front of his house, and has been called after his name. After his demise he has been buried in the place he used to teach,

- and we built for him the grave that continues to be a favoured place to visit for Algerians.
