Abstract

The Guembri is the Gnawa' s musical instrument. It is found mainly in North Africa and Mali, where it was brought along by slaves from Guinea; this derivative of African Ngoni is also played by the Berbers and Tuaregs. It is a three stringed skin-covered bass plucked lute, with a body hollowed out from a single piece of wood and covered with camel skin; the long neck passes through the top of the body and runs under the face. Accompanied by Qraqeb (metal castanets) and a big drum, the Guembri is played by the “Maâlem” (master), to follow the adepts ‘trance during nighttime rituals called “lila”, mix of fun and therapy. The trance is supposed to allow the adept to remove all afflictions.
