Abstract

The Emir Khaled El Hachemi Ben Abdelkader was born in Damascus February 20, 1875. He went to school and learned Arabic and French in his hometown. In 1892, he entered the Military Academy of Saint-Cyr which he left in 1897. In 1913, he took part in the First World War as a Spahi officer and withdrew from the French army in 1919. Later, he was inspired by the activism and knowledge of the Arab-Islamic civilization of his grand father, the Emir Abdelkader, to oppose colonialist policies. The French authorities opposed an outright refusal to his repeated attempts to return to Algeria, until his death January 9, 1936.
