Abstract

This is about an outstanding percussionist’s career. Alilou, whose real name is Ali Debbah, is a child of the Casbah, born in 1924 in Souk el Djemaa in the low Casbah of Algiers. At a very young age he starts banging, in secret, on the Derbouka, a percussion instrument. His parents are unaware of that growing passion and his first derbouka is offered to him by his neighbor. the second is given to him by his teacher Saddek Bejaoui and he decides to devote himself to music. He will accompany El Hachemi Guerrouabi and El Hadj M'hamed El Anka. Alilou tells his life as a "drabekdji"(derbouka player).
