Abstract

The history of the high school of fine arts dates back to the middle of the 19th century. It had been a school for drawing in 1843 before it became an official institution as a municipal school, in 1848. In 1954, the architects Leon Claro and Jaques Darbeda were instructed to build the current school, in the gardens of Gatliff Park ( now Zyriab Park). After the independence of Algeria (1962), the task of the national school of architecture and fine arts was to train the Algerian elite in architecture and plastic arts. - Interview with Mr Heddane, teacher of sculpture. - Interview with Mr Ben Yelles El Bachir, fine arts school headmaster
