2009Abstract
The Danube river flows through Croatia over a distance of 140 km and it is a natural frontier between Croatia, Serbia and Hungary (the river runs through the regions of Slavonia, Baranya, Syrmia, Bachka and Vojvodina). Because of its strategic and economic importance, the border controls commerce and navigation. Since Antiquity and maybe even since prehistoric times, people here built fortresses. The oldest have disappeared but it is to presume that the new ones were bulit on the same spots. Some are mentioned only in old documents. The biggest and strongest castles survived and witness tumultuous centuries.Type
