Abstract

Croatian Apoksiomen is one of the few surviving Greek statues that once were adorning the Greek cities and sanctuaries, especially the training ground (gymnasion, palaistra). The statue was surfaced in 1999 near Losinj. After extensive conservation and restoration that lasted for six years, Apoksiomen was presented at the exhibition in Zagreb in 2006. The statue was found in the offshore islands Orjule near the island of Losinj. It was an accidental discovery of Belgian tourist René Wouters. The finding was reported to the Ministry of Culture in autumn 1998. The Ministry made ​​a project of protection of underwater archaeological sites and finds, and prevention of possible looting and devastation. Because of the dangers of illegal diving on the site, urgent action was taken to remove the statue from the sea. On 27 april 1999, 14 teams of divers of the Ministry of Culture, Special Police, SUBMAR Company Ltd. from Mali Losinj and technical staff pulled out the statue after, as will be shown later, nearly two thousand year.
