Abstract

Nikos Kazantzakis received the award for the best foreign novel in 1954 for his book ‘Alexis Zorba’. He was born on the island of Crete; he studied philosophy in Paris and was Bergson's student. He had made numerous study tours around the world before he got involved into politics as President of the Greek Socialist Party and was elected Minister. In 1947, he moved to France where he worked for UNESCO. He lived the last ten years of his life in Antibes, where he regularly saw Melina Mercouri, Greek politician who sang one of his poems.
