Abstract

Istanbul, the former Constantinople, is full of treasures buried underground. Remnants of the Great Palace, the nerve center of the Byzantine emperors of the 4th century to the 10th, have recently been updated. The finds include Chaldkè, monumental gate and the only link between the palace and the outside world, vaulted rooms of the Palace of Constantine, baths, or the remains of a church and some 60 skeletons. This site should be open to the public by the end of the year. But other remnants of the Grand Palais were not so lucky, and are likely to disappear completely if the Turkish authorities do not take the necessary steps ...
