Abstract

The Arab World Institute closed the Year of Algeria with an exhibition featuring the paintings of the greatest painters inspired by the colonial policy of France. The conquest of Algeria has fed the exotic and Oriental dreams of the painters but painting was also used as war propaganda... Some painters like Chasseriau show the cruelty of war, and this artist will be able to show also all the nobility of the leader Abdelkader. Eugene Fromentin paints the daily life, the desert and the Nomads. Auguste Renoir succumbs to the charms of the Oriental mode and restores the light, aesthetics and brilliance of Algeria. Comments on factual pictures alternating with the interview of Stéphane Guegand, curator of the exhibition.
