Abstract

The Roman city of Jerash was built in the period between the first and the fourth century. It is located north of Jordan and was discovered in 1806. Its history is part of a great civilization, what remains from the city is : a temple called the Artimus temple, colonnades of Zeus' temple and the nymphs’ path. The visitors can enjoy the main square and have access to the southern amphitheatre where cultural festivals have been held since 1981. The festival of Jerash for culture and arts is held every year in july under the patronage of her Majesty the Queen, Noor Al Hussein.

- We are now in the ancient Roman city Gerasa, built 2000 years ago.

- It remains today one of the most complete and best preserved cities of the Roman cities

- built between the 1st and 4th century AD.

- It is part of the great cities of the ancient Middle East. Gerasa is considered the only Roman rural town, regarding its construction and its housing,

- and is perhaps the best model of conservation of ancient cities in the Middle East.

- Gerasa is located in a valley surrounded by the mountains of Gilead. It is three-quarters of an hour drive from Amman.

- Gerasa was discovered by West through the German traveller Siden, in 1806.

- Since that time, many people have visited the city and wrote down their impressions and comments.

- We can trace the history of Gerasa until the 4th century. The second century was the golden age of the city,

- this is the time where the most beautiful homes that we see now were built.

- The triumphal arch was built during the visit of Emperor Hadrian, in 129/130 AD winter.

- The Temple of Artemis, goddess of the city, has been expanded with its large pillars in 150.

- The temple of Zeus was also rebuilt in 163, and the King’s Highway in 191.

- The city reached the peak of its development and wealth in the early 3rd century, when it was elevated to the status of a province.

- Those who visit Gerasa admire the greatness of the main square. One can go to “street of pillars” or south to the theatre, built in the 1st century.

- The main square, “street of pillars”, Artemis exhibition and theatre in the south are the main sites of Gerasa festival of arts and culture, which has been held annually since 1981.

- Under the supervision of her Majesty Queen Noor, the festival is held every July by the higher Committee of Gerasa festival and chaired by its Majesty.

- This is a major event where various shows and activities are held, and where ancient monuments of Gerasa come back to life for two weeks.

- Doors are open to citizens and Arab and foreign visitors to admire the various shows,

- plays, ballet and classical music concerts.
