Abstract

Discovery of the valleys, villages and traditional festivals of Molise, a region rich in forests inhabited by bears, wolves and especially by deer, the most important animals of this region. At the heart of the valley we find the source and the river of Volturno that starts its long journey in these mountains, to the plains of Campania and the Tyrrhenian Sea. The largest religious monument in the valley is the Abbey of San Vincenzo al Volturno, founded between the seventh and eighth centuries: it was for centuries the spiritual and administrative headquarters of this region, although it has been devastated several times by wars, invasions and earthquakes. In the Abbey there is the most important cycle of medieval frescoes, preserved Italy, ordered by Epiphanius, abbot of San Vincenzo. In the early 90's, the Abbey was occupied by a small community of Benedictine nuns, who took over the activity for which the order of Benedictines was famous for centuries: the rewriting of texts from the Middle Ages, the leather binding, inspired by codes and ancient sacred books. Not far from the Abbey, there is a village, Scapoli, famous for its bagpipes, which are exhibited in the local museum and can be heard during the Christmas holidays, thanks to the pipers - the zampognari - who play a repertoire of traditional and popular Christmas songs of Molise, Abruzzo and Ciociaria. Some artists from Castelnuovo a Volturno have transformed the bagpipes to compose and perform the sounds of higher level, such as themembers of"Arche" band,Pietro Ricci, Ernest Carracillo and Lino Miniscalco, offering a repertoire inspired by the popular tradition of Molise but much more modern.
