Abstract

This episode of the cultural program “Passepartout” is dedicated to the issue of streets in contemporary European cities. By taking the example of Modena, architecture professor Marco Romano, in the company of art critic and presenter Philippe Daverio, debate on the historical origins of the city centers. They underline the difference between the historical centers with buildings openning on streets and squares, and modern areas where the inhabitants are isolated from each other, because of the lack of classical urbanistic organization. As an example, they show a new residential area on the outskirts, built without roads and infrastructure. Marco Romano illustrates his requalification project of the southern suburbs, based on the model of the historical center of the city, in order to revive social life. An excerpt from the movie "Caro Diario" shows director Nanni Moretti going for a ride on his scooter through the streets of Rome.
