Abstract

The art of hand-wrought iron uses blacksmithing techniques to make works of art or furniture. In this episode, the craftsman presents the different steps to manifacture furniture as well as other iron items and how they are put together to obtain art forms that give them a modern look, different from the traditional uses ( doors, windows, fences...). As to modern blacksmithing, it derives from the art of hand-wrought iron which the arabs were famous for in their buildings and public spaces. Blacksmithing workshops appeared mainly among the tribal communities. This art consists of shaping iron, adding copper accessories and combining it with wood and brass panels, then comes the etching stage using modern technology to adapt the iron according to prior design. This art is considered as an extension of blacksmithing which attracts young people even though it requires hours of efforts, it represents a new trend in the art of building in Tunisia.
