Abstract

This video is about the natural processes and human exploitation of a truly Mediterranean woodland, the cork oak groves. The program looks at the biological characteristics of cork oaks and their defense against fire: a thick layer of fireproof suberized bark, the unique process of cork oak forestry management, culminating 14 years later in bark stripping, and the different cork products and their uses, from traditional crafts to modern industrial processes.
